I am wanting to invest in some stocks. Instead of using a stock broker, I would rather make my own choices. It looks like Ameritrade may be a good place. Anyone have any suggestions or comments either way on where I should open an account up?

  1. sharebuilder offers the lowest prices around

  2. TD Ameritrade is good.

You can also look into E*Trade and Scottrade.

Or for smaller monthly investments check out ShareBuilder.

  3. Yea, I agree with you.  I prefer discount brokers as opposed to full service ones because I like to make my own choices.  I currently use Firstrade ( http://www.firstrade.com/ ).  They are much cheaper than big name brokers such as Ameritrade, Etrade, and Schwab. Execution is fast and the website is very easy to use.  I would definitely recommend you to check them out.

Firstrade currently has a refer-a-friend program, so if you're interested in opening account with them, email me for a referral code. It's a win-win situation because you'll get your first 5 trades free.

  4. Pick the best stock broker, one with low fees.., it took me some time to see that most of my gains were lost to the fees i paid to actually buy stock and sell it, i suggest zecco, they are the ONLY ones who offer free stock trades.

  5. Scottrade: reasonably priced trades...excellent research and trading " tools". The smallest investors get almost all the facilities that the biggest get.

  6. All major brokerage firms provide their clients with on-line services, including trading platforms, latest market & financial news and research.

Customer need to select the site that is best for them.  Traders have requirements in a site, while investors have other requirements. You don't let fees/commissions be the primary factor in making your decision.  The firms order routing, product availability, trading platform is much more important than their fees/commissions.

Although most sites are geared to general securities and commodities, however customers may have special needs for the types of products they trade, and the markets in which they trade.

It seems that the most popular firms for on-line investing all of which provide excellent platforms and services are; Scottrade; Chas.Schwab; TDAmeritrade; Fidelity; E-Trade and Thinkorswim.
