  1. At the animal shelter you walk the dogs or socialize with cats in the play room.Basically you are having fun while getting your comm. serv. credit.I have been a volunteer at animal control for 2 years now.Now I am the volunteer coordinator.

After you have walked dogs for about 3 months you go on to do adoptions, assist people in picking out a pet. This is a lot of fun talking to people and learning more about the animals. If you like animals you will love the shelter!!

  2. The best place to do community service is where the cause and the work is of interest to you. Be prepared to talk about why it is you want to volunteer and what skills you can offer. Volunteering is not a right -- it's a privilege. Like finding a job, you might have to apply and interview at many different places before you are chosen for an opportunity.

Also, contact your local volunteer center; you can find this via the Points of Light Foundation web site,

There's also this government sponsored site, http://volunteer.gov/gov/ which provides volunteer positions through USA federal land agencies like Fish & Wildlife, Forest Service, National Parks, etc.

If you want to be a volunteer to help with the consequences of a natural disaster, such as Hurricane Katrina, you need to register and prepare NOW. Here's a web site where you can register and start your preparation so that you can help the next time disaster strikes:

  3. the library or the civic center

  4. the morgue
