Question:

Where is the best place to find larger businesses for sale?

I am not really interested in shops, bed and breakfasts or other types of small business.

My partner and I have up to £3 million to spend on a trading business for sale, I guess that means the annual turnover could be anywhere from £1m to £5m. I have looked at a few business broker sites and a couple of businesses for sale databases and not really been excited about what I've seen.

Any ideas?

  1. You really need to qualify what sort of business you want and have some knowledge of its place in the market. Then you need to decide where you are looking to drive the business. At the moment there are lots of businesses available that can be developed.

Start with what you are interested in and see what's about within your price range.

  2. If you are based in the UK, without a doubt you should sign up to the Business Sale Report. They have been around for as long as I can remember, and are used a lot by people in the industry and those 'in the know'.

The three good things about them is that:

1] they only list those businesses with annual turnover of over £1m

2] they filter out all the rubbish

3] they actually release all the contact details for vendors - you don't have to go back to them for each business you are interested in.
