  1. Truthfully i learned by doing it. My dad was just like get in the truck and go. Learn by doing don't waste money on lessons, if someone has an old junky standard ask to use it and go at it...if it has 4 wheel drive try puting it in four low then going through the gears cause you cant hardly stall in four low... the clutch is the hardest thing to get use to.

  2. You are not going to find a dealer who will let you drive a stick-shift car if you don't know how.

Find a relative or friend who has a stick-shift car and get them to let you practice with it.

First, you can practice on a driveway, going backward and forward in 1st gear and reverse gear, over and over. This gives you practice and experience in using the clutch and gas pedal, without complicating things trying to use all gears, clutch, and gas at the same time.

As you get the feel for the clutch and gas, go to a large empty parking lot and practice using 1st and 2nd gear. Start using 1st, shift to 2nd, and stop. Then start over again. Over and over.

Then graduate to a country road where you can use all gears. Stop, start, go through 1st, 2nd and other gears. Do it over again. Over and over.

After a while it will come naturally to you and you'll wonder how you ever thought you couldn't do it. Have fun and good luck.

  3. In a big parking lot of a park, or any place that has lots of room. Have a experienced manual driver teach you the basics. Driving manual is much more fun than auto. Have fun~

  4. Try the parking lot of a church. They are usually empty, except on Wednesdays or Sundays.

  5. a local DMV i believe.... they have lessons as far as i know....

  6. Find someone who drives a stick shift and have them show you. Go riding with them for a bit and see how they work the car. If you're lucky they will let you drive it, but try it in a parking lot first. That way you dont kill anyone lol

I learned in a parking lot, its tricky at first, but once you get it, you'll be able to drive anything.

  7. The best thing to do (which I did) is to go to a small dealership or private dealer...find a stick shift car...PRETEND like you want to buy it, but tell then you don't know how.

Small dealerships like that REALLY REALLY want the opportunity to sell cars and rip you off, so they will be more than happy to spend some time with you to acclamate you with a stick shift automobile.

Then, find a friend or relative who has a stick shift and you can practice what you've learned a bit more with that before you go to buy your car.

    Good luck! = )
