  1. Self defence? Vee Arnis Jitsu is probably a good bet.

  2. It depends on what you want to learn.

I can help you if you can say what your goals and preferences are.

In Manhattan there is Natural Chinese Martial Arts - GM Lin Chih-Young - All the Internal Arts, Sun Ping, Sanda, Tung Pei, Northern Shaolin, this man is a living encyclopedia of MA.

Also Shinjinbukan is a branch of Okinawan Karate. The Founder, Onaga Yoshimitsu is probably the only person in the world with the MOST knowledge of "ti" - the Original Okinawan Art before Chinese MA were incorporated with it. The NYC Instructor is Jimmy Mora.

I am not affiliated with either of these schools. I just know them well and highly recommend them.

Most everything else is ruled by ego and BS.

Stay away from Alan Lee's kung fu wusu. He doesn't know any martial art. HE learned ONE Tam Tui form and split it up into two sets(and doesn't even do them well). After, you make up your own "forms"... it's BS!

There is also a place claiming they do "authentic" shaolin... it's shaolin-do... don't waste your time and money. This school is a farce.

  6. That depends in what part of NYC you are in!!

Their are several GOOD schools in NYC but depending on where you are located or will be located would easier give you a list of good schools.

www.legendkarate.com is a good one if you are in Staten Island or Brooklyn and want a traditional Japanese style, but if you want Chinese or Korean or another than their are others too!

So really depends where you will be in NYC
