  1. hawwaii

  2. Do you live near the ocean or are you going to learn on a trip?

If you live near the ocean and have your own equipment, try talking to some of the local surfers and asking them where a good place to learn is. Some may give you a hard time but most will be willing to help you. Know you limitations and surf some place with life guards nearby. The surf can be bigger than it looks and you don't want to be learning on days that are too big.

Lessons are a good idea. Most schools provide the equipment so you can try surfing without having to spend a lot of money on a board and wetsuit. It will also help you and the rest of us in the water to know the rules. Getting hit by a surfboard hurts and your instructors will teach you how to be safe out in the water.

If you plan on learning on a trip, say Hawaii, talk to your hotel to see if they recommend any instructors for private lessons. It would be rare for you to learn to surf in just a couple days on vacation, but most outfitters will give you a board and take you to a place where you will probably get up and have a good time.

Learning to surf takes time. Don't give up and keep learning as much as you can. Once you learn, you'll find surfing is a lot of fun.

  6. So where do you live? This might help the people answering.. If you live in Hawaii, there's some good places, if you live in Australia, there's places, if you live in Alaska....

Sorry haha. But seriously if you want a specific place, give more info on where you live.

For example, in Southern California, more specifically Orange County, I think that Doheny Beach is a great place to learn. Here are my reasons and you should find a place that has simliar characteristics to learn at:

    - The waves are consistently small and slow.

    - There isn't a huge tidal flux, meaning there is only a few feet difference between high and low tide, making it surfable all day. Some place have reef or rocks and when the tide gets real low it gets dangerous to surf there. Not something you want to deal with when you are a beginner.

    - There's rocks, but not huge dangerous ones, just ones on the bottom that make it harder to walk out. Go out during higher tide, or find a beach that has a sandy bottom.

    - Not too crowded.

    - There is a pretty mellow vibe out there. There isn't "localism" really, where you would have to earn your spot in the lineup (basically you can show up on your first day out and catch waves just like anyone else. No one is going to really hassle you for being new as long as you have proper etiquette.)

Find a surf school to attend- they aren't very long. Get a private instructor. Get a group of your friends to all learn together. Go out with a friend that already surfs... There are many options. It really helps to go out with someone that knows what they are doing so they can give you tips. Surfing is harder than it looks and you can probably do fine just teaching yourself, but keep in mind having someone there to guide you will prevent you from making common mistakes or from getting into bad habits early on. Good luck getting out there.

  8. At the surf club

  9. It will depend on three things,  where you live, the conditions, and if you have the _alls...

  10. Someplace with waves...seriously.

    EDIT:

If you are in Hawaii, Waikiki Beach (possibly mispelled) is the best place. It is a tourist trap, all sand, slow waves of usually less than 2 feet, and instructors right there. You walk up to a stand, pay the lesson fee (I think I paid like $20 or something), and they show you how to surf.
