we were there in october and had a fab time' stayed in the smugglers rest about 5mins from giants causeway, and it was very good reasonable priced accomadation was exellent and the food was superb,very nice

hi, yeah both portrush and castlerock both really nice towns, and have easy access to the giants causeway.  In terms of wheres best to stay? there are various hotels dotted all over the north coast-however would you consider renting a self-catering cottage? or staying in a b&b? both cheap alternatives and gives you a chance to speak with locals... there are nice ones in portrush(sea side town with amusement centre- small with with roller coaster, ghost train etc, lovely beaches etc and if u visit portrush definately make a visit to the Ramore Wine Bar down at the harbour-excellant food with great atmosphere very popular with the locals!! i should know as i live close by.)

Coleraine is a larger town with pretty good shopping, and it has the Lodge Hotel, fairly reasonable and again good access to everywhere on the north coast-assuming you will have a car.

Castlerock is a small town, set off a beautiful beach- again there will be many self catering apartments etc to stay at as well as a caravan park- u dont mention when you wil be goin but its advised you book asap for any of these towns as they have a tendancy to book fast esp at certain times of the year!

the North Coast really is beautiful -i dont appreciate it enough!!

Stay in Cushendall , Cushendun or Ballycastle all of which are by the sea Namely the Glens of Antrim, And go out fo a drink  while your there

Portrush is the biggest town in that area.  There is plenty to do just there in the town itself with loads of top-class inexpensive accommodation but being so close to Bushmills, Giants Causeway, Carrick-a-Reed rope bridge makes it an ideal base to explore this wonderful part of northern ireland.

The North Coast towns of Portrush and Portstewart are very close to the Giants Causeway and both are distinguished by fantastic beaches. Portrush can get rowdy with so-called hard men down from Derry and Belfast for the day, Portstewart is a bit quieter. There are also some other neat little towns on the fabulously scenic north Antrim coast which are within easy reach of the Causeway. Don't expect to be blown away by the Giants Causeway, though, it's interesting but not on the grand scale its name suggests.

PS: Carrickfergus is miles away from the Causeway (about 60 miles in fact). I think the other guy who answered means Castelrock which is closer but still not that convenient.
