  1. Your Best bet for huge waves is not in Honolulu...North Shore (45 minutes-1 hour from the Honolulu Airport) (Waimea,Haleiwa,Sunset) is where you would want to be...especially in the Winter months(December is Best) As far as Hotels or Resorts...Turtle Bay would be my pick~~Aloha~~Michelle~~

  3. Yeah, Turtle Bay is almost the only hotel anywhere near the North Shore of Oahu. In the winter, Town Side (Honolulu) tends to be like glass. Fabulous for snorkeling, but junk for surfing. In the summer, North Shore is like glass, and the south-facing shores might get a bump or two--maybe 3 to 6 feet. Enough to get the boogie boarders and the longboarders out.

But you should know big waves are remarkably unpredictable. There's a big wave surfing contest--the Quiksilver Big Wave Invitational in Memory of Eddie Aikau--that doesn't even run every year. I don't think it's run in the last two. Granted, sometimes the waves are over 25 feet, but other conditions are not right for surfing.

In January 1998, they tried to have it on a particular Wednesday, but the waves were too big! I was at Waimea to see 40' waves on that day, and it was amazing. I got to see that because I lived in Honolulu. It was a matter of getting in the car and driving to the North Shore. Even with all the weather technology we have, the wave predictions might give you a couple days notice that the big waves are coming. Not enough time to plan a trip out into the middle of the Pacific Ocean.

If you're happy with 12 footers, 16 footers, those are more common on the North Shore in the winter, but still no guarans.  Last winter was just junk for waves.

  4.   The best place to see the waves ,is just everyone else said . Turtle bay is kind of expensive  to stay . It all going to depends  on what you want to spend. There a condo place just before you get into  turtle bay and is alot cheaper place and you  can cook and BBQ there . Meal can be very expensive there  so it one way to save money . If  you don't like  that place . There are other condo's to rent all over the area .  I would check  the condos out first . You'll be  surprise how much cheaper  the vacation can be .
