Edinburgh - is beautiful and less crowded than London. Currently the Edinburgh Festival is on, lot's to see and do!

Most of the major cities such as Manchester, London. Liverpool etc are great places to visit with loads to do for all tastes. If you'd rather go to somewhere more rural, the peak district or the lake district are nice, then there is the coast if you'd rather go to the seaside.

You should read Notes From A Small Island by Bill Bryson as he travels around the UK and gives a brutal and honest opinion of all the main towns. It gives you a good idea of where is worth visiting.
