  1. Marks and Spencer on Oxford Street- It's free to convert money and its easy to find the shop! Marks and Spencer is a department store but they have an exchange bureau!

  2. By far the best way to deal with money exchange

when travelling is not to do it all .... by which I mean ...

leave your money in your home bank account,

take your ATM card, and withdraw as needed

    from ATMs at your destination.

For both cost and convenience, it cannot be beat.

Just check the back of your ATM card for symbols

like STAR, PLUS, CIRRUS, etc. and then find an

ATM which matches one of them.  Virtually all big

    banks will do that.

You get a good exchange rate, and the fees

are minimal - about $3-4 per withdrawal.

Because of that fee you should take it in as large

amounts at once as your limit allows and you

    feel comfortable carrying around.

You should buy a few pounds at American Express

or some other exchange bureau before you leave

so you are sure to have enough money to get from

the airport into town without the hassle of finding

an exchange office, but keep that amount low as

it is an expensive way to do it.

  3. It would be cheaper here.  Most post offices do dollars and euros and some do all other currencies as well.  Or Marks&Spencers are good.  Check on both websites for the exchange rate. Neither charge commision.

If you do it at airports or in other countries they will charge commission and you lose money.

  4. ATMs are at the airport.  Just call your bank before you go and let them know the dates of your travel.  Then when at the machine, look at the slot for your card closely.  Make sure it doesn't look like an insert has been placed in it to read your card.  Then when entering your pin, cover the keyboard with your other hand or stand really close to block other's view.  My wife got $2000 taken out of her account earlier this year by someone who must of seen her info.  She used an ATM at Heathrow.  ATMs are still the best way to convert cash and there is no need to carry any pounds with you when you get your cash at the airport of arrival.  In London,  ATMs are everywhere.
