Where is the engine number located on a motorbike engine?

When you see numbers like CBR500, the number is the engine size.

But lately some motorcycles are coming out with number like R6  (for 600cc) and R1 (for 1000cc).

on the cases, look down by the gearbox,

Sometimes they are located on a flat strip of casting right on top of the engine (a little on the inside of crankcase).  In some cases, they are to be seen right at the bottom of the engine.  The best way to locate the correct place is to check your manual.  It is always mentioned there clearly.  Both the location of the chassis as well as the engine number.
