My BMW 318 i se is misfiring and the garage ran an engine diagnostic. No fault came up. He told me that the fuel filter could be blocked up or the leads could need replacing. Anyone know where the fuel filter is?

  1. It's under the car just ahead of the fuel tank

  2. Plug leads and plugs should be changed annually, or you will pay for it in poor performance and fuel economy.  I would expect it to be a problem just of the HT circuit, so change the rotor-arm and the distributor cap too.  Don't lose the firing order on the new cap!  Find out which is the 'front' of the cap, mark it with a little nail-varnish, and work the new leads onto it, in the same relative positions as the one on your engine, so you can remove the cap and replace it with the new one.  Sticky labels on the end of the plug leads is a good idea too.

The fuel-filter is Coke-can like in appearance, clamped under the car near the rear axle...  The fuel line feeds into the pump, which looks quite similar, but has electrical cables running to it to power and earth it, and from the pump into the filter.  A compatible filter should cost not more that ten pounds.  Do a good job and replace all the fuel-pipe clips you can see, if there is corrosion on them.  Also, if the fuel-pipes look perished, they can have pin-holes in them which are almost impossible to see, but can stop your car dead...  Five pounds worth of new fuel line will see you running well for the next ten years!

Obviously, working on the fuel system, you should disconnect the negative lead from the battery, and use a line-clamp to stop spilling a tank of fuel all over you.

  3. If its an e30 its above the back axle, if its an e36 its under the car under the passenger seat, that IS theanswer to YOUR question.

  4. try the fuel tank
