  1. 1 the fuel pump is located in the fuel tank under the truck.

#2  If you think you can do it, get yourself a chilton's book or some manual and go for it.  A gm doesn't make changing the fuel pump easy.  One thing about the gm, small thing.  The fuel pump isn't held in by screws like others, but requires a drift to back it out.  Use a brass drift, since steel against steel can spark.  If you do this job, use extreme caution, it is dangerous.

  2. As already said, it is located inside the fuel tank.

To replace it, you need to empty the tank as much as possible. The easiest way is to siphon the tank, or use a drill-driven mini pump to extract the fuel as much as possible.

Next is to disconnect the filler and vent pipe from the tank. Depending on location, it may be easier to disconnect them from the cap near the fuel door but check for clearance for lowering the tank at each place to make sure that you can easily lower the tank (truck is a little different than the Tahoe/Burb).

Here is where you need to make a decision... On the trucks, it is easier to loosen the front strap to where it is barely holding the tank, then remove the rear tank strap completely. Then you can access the wiring and fuel line connections at the sending unit on the top of the tank. On the Burb, it may be different... Disconnect all that stuff, then go ahead and finish removing the second tank strap.

Using a wire brush, clean all around the top of the tank at the sending unit, as I would imagine like all the others I've seen, there will be a build up of rocks/dirt/ect. Knock all the garb loose, then using compressed air, blow it clean. Take your time because you don't want any of this stuff to enter the tank if you can help it.

There is a metal ring holding the sending unit in place. You can use a flat-head screwdriver to remove it, by placing it against a vertical tab, and tapping the handle of the screwdriver with a hammer.

Lift out the sending unit carefully, so that it isn't damaged. Remove the pump from the assembly, and replace with the new pump. Install the NEW pump screen to the pump.

You may notice a small amount of dirt and c**p at the bottom of your tank. If you have small hands, go ahead and try to get it out using some paper towels. If not, oh well.

Install sending unit with new pump, and use the new rubber o-ring at the sending unit/tank mating surface. Compressing the o-ring to install the unit may be difficult, so tough up. Then place the keeper ring and tap with screwdriver to tighten.

Then install your tank, make sure you get everything connected during install.

It is a fairly simple process, just a lot of time and effort involved. It will take a few hours to complete.

  3. It's in the fuel tank. You have to remove the tank after safely emptying it,  remove the sending unit. You can then access it. Better make sure it's the pump before you do all that work.

  4. in the fuel tank. you have to remove the tank then remove the pump
