Where is the gas smell coming from?

I have a 96 Camaro and I've taken good care of it. For about 2 years it has had a really strong odor of gasoline after it sits for a few hours. When I drive it, the smell doesn't seem as bad. Mechanics have not been able to find any fuel leaks, although my gas mileage has decreased to 13 - 15 mpg. I'm getting it checked again soon because it is getting really bad. Do you have any ideas of what it might be? Could be the muffler? It is really the worst when you first get in the car so I can't see how it would be anything like the muffler.

  1. could be the canister-if you are one that rounds to the next dollar or cents when filling up you may have ruined the canister. the canister is supposed to absorb the gas fumes. could also be a small leak between the tank and /or the fuel pump itself.

  2. sounds like you have a gas leak somewhere. it might not be at the point that,s it,s dripping, but still leaking. the leak might be on top of the tank. i use to smell gas in my car, until i changed the charcoal canister filter.

  3. really not so smart to drive any car with a gas leak for a day much les two yrs and if you smell it then its leaking somewhere.. your just lucky its not on the motor.... and really if your taking care of car it would have been looked after two yrs ago either a bad line or could be maybe the hose between tank and filler neck... muffler might be bad but you still shouldnt smell gas ...Mechanics you have are not so bright or good you say your car smells of gas you say you car is getting bad mileage you say your car might need a muffer whats the Mechanics been doing... find another job and just say fix my car it needs help

  4. i would check to see if the gas cap holds a seal if not just buy a new one
