My Scott's lawnmower motor surges while running and some suggestions I received involved adjusting the governer bar and the spring on the governer. Where might that be located?

  1. adjusting gov should not stop the surging- the spring might be stretched-try cleaning air filter and new spark plug-check gas tank for debris- make sure gov is clean from debris-ps gov is under fuel filter in most models

  2. check your air filter and see if it is dirty if it is replace with a new one. if you do not know where gov. and spring is you do not need to tinker with it.find some one that can help you.

  3. The governor is not the problem.  The problem most likely is a dirty or mis adjusted carburetor.  If the carb can be adjusted try turning the adjustment out 1/4 turn and see it that helps if not try it the other way until it runs smoothly.  If it is not adjustable it sounds like it needs cleaning.  It should be removed, taken apart, soaked in a good cleaner and put together with a rebuild kit.  The governor is doing what it is supposed to do, keep the engine at a steady speed.  The engine is trying to die or slow down and the governor is speeding it back up, that is the surging.

  4. under the air cleaner look for a spring loaded valve  it has a s***w that runs against a stop, that s***w is your governor...................tom
