CEDAR TAVERN!!  It was recently renovated but is still the BEST inexpensive meal in the city.  Plus it is open late and serves all night.  This is not a diner people it is a tavern style restaurant.  The food isn't creative or flashy, but it tastes great and the prices are awesome for what you get!!

Tads Steak house in Times Square and the cheap hot dog stand on 38th and 8th Avenue i forget the name of it but that is your best bet

the asian restaurants in chinatown! always affordable and the food is always fresh and healthy.

Well gotta be honest about that -

Grey's Papya - has the best hot dogs and the best drinks and is certainly cheap.  There are a few Papaya places and they are all fantastic.

Also can recommend restaurants in Chinatown, but not one in particular as I haven't been down there in ages, but I always had a great meal and never spent that much.

If you love big hamburgers- Jackson Hole, there are a number of them spread around the city, you certainly get your money's worth for one of the biggest hamberger's of great meat.

For great chinese, go to Wo Hop, 17 Mott Street, DOWNSTAIRS! There's always a line, and it is always worth it. The food is great, and the prices are too.

Also, check out the wonderful variety of foods that you can get off of the street vendors around the city. You'd be surprised at how good, and how affordable some of it can be!
