  1. Analyzing a flame can be quite complex although the blue part of the flame is the hottest because it is closer to which the source of the flame is being created.

  2. The area just above the blue region. The blue region consists of unburned & partially burned fuel.

  3. Right near the wick. That is where the most oxygen is used, if you notice, it is blue. Most people aren't used to blue being hot and red cold but that is actually how it goes in astronomy. :)

  4. the hottest part is at the tip. ask any welder

  5. We only think of red being hot and blue being cold is from elements like fire and ice. It is just something that we pick up over time, like heart means love.

  6. the blue part

  7. The tip, where it is the brightest.

  8. The small lightly colored part right above the wick (Or if using a bunson burner, the bottom of the flame to about 3/4 the way up, inside the outer part.

  9. Blue and violet wavelengths are the shortest and their frequency is the highest, of the visible part of the spectrum anyway.

This makes them the most energetic, which makes them the hottest.

This knowledge can also be used to determine the relative temperature of stars. Red giants are cool compared to Blue giants. Yellow stars are about medium.

The colors increase in frequency and decrease in wavelengths from Red (the lowest frequency and longest wavelength) to Orange,Yellow,Green,Blue,Indigo and violet.

But Indigo isn't really there, it's just a shade of blue, so don't look for it. Newton threw it in because he had a thing about the number seven:)

It's a little confusing because we're used to thinking of red as hot and blue as cold but it's not really true, only psychologically. I think because blood is red and when we're cold we turn blue.
