It's a pleasant 18 degrees C here in Norwich, UK today. Looking at the BBC's weather resource, I found that Basra in Iraq should be 45 degrees C today (Boy! That's hot!). Is there anywhere hotter?

  1. Actually, the Indian subcontinent (especially the central and northwestern desert areas) tends to be the hottest in May. Iraq and the rest of the Middle East experience average daytime temperatures of around 38-40 C in May, so that 45 C reading is a bit unusual this early in the summer. Parts of India experience average May high temperatures well over 40 C, beating both the Sahara and the Arabian deserts. By June, these two deserts easily rank #1 as the hottest places in the world and maintain this rank well into September. Monsoonal rains arrive in India in June and demote it to beyond the top 10.

Average temperatures are more important than extreme values. I have lived in the Middle East and there is absolutely no comparison with Arizona or Nevada. The U.S deserts get occasional summer cooling (even if it 'cools' to just 38 C), but the Middle East desert countries get NONE. Average summer temperatures in Kuwait are slightly higher than they are in Death Valley. In Kuwait, for example, average July highs are around 45-47 C, with extremes hitting the low 50s. Death Valley may record more extreme highs (mid to upper 50s Celsius) but also records some cooler days in the high 30s whereas the ME has none between June and August.

Living in the ME has also quashed the popular myth "deserts are hot during the day and cold at night". Overnight lows of 30 to 35 degrees Celsius are not cold by any stretch of the imagination. As a matter of fact, the *record lows* for June, July and August in Kuwait and southern Iraq are in the low 20s Celsius. That would be as rare as getting an August frost in Norwich.

  2. I know Bullhead City, Arizona gets around 125 or hotter during summer...

  3. south africa

    but...top 10 hottest countries are.

    1 Al'Aziziyah, Libya 136.4

2 Greenland Ranch, Death Valley, United States 134.0

    3 Ghudamis,, Libya 131.0

    4 Kebili, Tunisia 131.0

    5 Tombouctou, Mali 130.1

    6 Araouane, Mali 130.0

    7 Tirat Tavi, Israel 129.0

  4. my bedroom when my babe comes round

  5. The hottest country of the world is said to be El’ Azizia. El’ Azizia is actually one of the municipalities of Libya. And it is located in the north of the country. Al ‘Azizia is also the name of its capital. The hottest ever atmosphere of air temperature was of about 57.8°C which in Fahrenheit in 136°F, was actually recorded at Al’Azizyah, in Libya, on 13 September in 1922. According to the records the place with the hottest average of air temperature is Dalol, Ethiopia, basically with an average temperature of 34.4°C and 93.9°F

Opposing to the experts opinion, the hottest temperatures do not usually occur any where near the equator. Al’aziziyah and the Death Valley, which is the location of the second highest temperature that was ever recorded, are located in the north temperature zone with latitudes 33°N and 36°N respectively. The top most part of mount Chimborazo is totally covered by glaciers despite the fact that it is 163km or 101 miles from the equator. Being the hottest place of the world there are a number of disadvantages faced by the people living there. As there is just weather through out the year and no rains, no winter etc. Well it is considered as a major draw back.

  6. The Sahara Desert in North Africa.

  7. The Empty Quarter of Saudi Arabia probably gets hotter, but since nobody lives there for very long it's very hard to tell.

  8. The Earth's core and not just in May

  9. Inside of a bolt of lightning.

  10. Middle East Belt is hot but the hottest average for may is in Indian sub continent, where average temperature for may is around 33 C.

But due to monsoon Indian sub continent gets cooler during June and July compared to Middle East.

  11. i would think the Sahara desert would be one of the hottest. the land itself runs from 45-67 degrees Celsius. though, the dust is between 23-45 degrees Celsius.

though, if you want the statistics of the hottest in the world, then they are El Azizia, Libya at 58°C, Death Valley located between California and Nevada, at 56.7°C (temperature goes from 54°C to below freezing at night in winter), Ghadamis, nearby El Azizia at 55°C, Kebili in Tunisia also at 55°C, and Tombouctou in Mali (city of Timbuktu) at 54.5°C. 4 of the 5 are part of Africa. Tombouctou is also where you'd find the Sahara desert.

wouldnt be south africa, but rather north africa. Libya is situated in north africa, so is Tunisia, and Tombouctou
