Question:

Where is the lost city of Atlantis supposed to be

I am not sure if this question should be in paranormal or in mythological and folklore. So since many here are scientifically minded, I thought I would try here first.

Also, it would be great if you would quote any sources you have, so I can do more research on my own.

Thanks!

  1. I Think that is a made up story, but there is a place called Atlantis on the Bermuda Triangle.

  2. The island was originally named Atlantis because it was thought to have been in the Atlantic ocean off of the coast of Spain near Africa.  I have seen two other theories on what Atlantis was and where it was located.

Plato was the first to record information about Atlantis, and it was mythical even in his time.  He spoke of an island that was just beyond a "gateway".  There have been questions about where the story was first told, and some believe that, instead of being in the Atlantic, as Plato describes, it was actually an island called Minoan Crete which was in the Mediterainian Sea.  The lifestyle of the residents of this island is very like that described by Plato.  See the third link below for archeological evidence for this theory.

Another theory that I heard was related by geologists.  It states that Antartica was at one time located near to the equator, and through very quick movements of the earth's crust, it the continent was rotated to the south pole.  The mechanism had to do with the ice caps getting off balance and the fact that the crust of the earth is actually floating on top of a layer of magma.  The rotation occurred very quickly (in a matter of weeks) and so, much of the civilization was lost.  In this theory, Antartica was Atlantis.

It seems that the Mediterainian island is the most likely explanation, but given the progression of the descriptions over the years, I have to wonder whether all of them are more myth than fact.  I hope this information was helpful!

  3. Well Atlantis is in Atlantis.... which is underwater..... with a bunch of dead people...

  4. Some folks think they found it off the coast of the Bahamas in the Atlantic.

The "Bimini Road" structures are intersting - but I think the machined marble columns and arches are the give-away.

A lot of the civilisations claim knowledge of this place.

I recon it was destroyed and sunk by massive nuclear explosions  - similar to how the dead sea was formed.

There is evidence of intense heat - around 1100 degrees C  - enough to melt rock on structures around the world. If Atlantis was sunk by such - it would have punched through a thin mantle - and caused volcanic activity.

  5. Its Antarctica, we all know it..lol

  6. If anyone really knew, they would have found it already . . . . .

  7. Off the cost of Bimini and that isn't supposed that is fact.

  8. Edgar Cayce, the famous American psychic, had predicted that Atlantis would be found in the Bahamas.  There have indeed been unusual rock formations found there, which some call the "Bimini Road."   Some people think these are natural, others think they are man-made.

  9. Many theories, one being it was an island of the Italian coastline which dissolved into the sea after a volcanic eruption. Another that it was off the coast of san francisco. Too many theories, including one that it wasn't of this planet. Another that it was another name for heaven. Another that they destroyed themselves accidentally by way of manipulating the weather of the planet, -shirley maclaine's theory in her book 'out on a limb'.

No one knows if it's fact or fiction.

  10. It's in the Pegasus galaxy

  11. The whereabouts of Atlantis has been a hot topic of debate for thousands of years.  Homer (ancient greek philosopher, and writer)  puts it behind the pillars of Hercules, which would be the island of Santorini, one of the Greek isles.  You can see some of the ruins if you visit.  What is left of the island is still beautiful, and the people are friendly.  There is also the theory that all of the Greek isles were once connected, before the eruption of the volcano.

Edgar Cayce, founder of ARE at Virginia Beach, he was a great psychic of his day.  He said that Atlantis was a series of islands that came all the way across from Greece down to Bimini in the Carribean.  He prophesied that part of Atlantis would be discovered near Bimini in 1968, and there indeed was a road discovered there.  Cayce passed away in 1947.
