Hi there,

My girlfriend is going to do a course at goldsmiths uni starting in sept. and we have decided to rent a flat together as I am working in and around central london...

We are looking for a reasonably priced, quite safe (yes, I know it's london!) area with decent transport links to New Cross and the city... Anyone got any good advice?

  1. the nicer areas would be beckenham, shortlands or bromley mainly. some parts of Catford can be pleasant as long as you're far enough away from the high streets and busy bits. there are train stations that you can get to St. John's from which is a 10 or so minute walk from Goldsmiths. going closer towards the city are just places like new cross and peckham which are horrible, run down areas. if the areas suggested are a bit too pricey (not sure what you consider reasonable!) then Downham is okish and the 136 bus runs straight through to New Cross.

for a one bed place in beckenham/bromley you'd probably expect to pay around £600+. downham and Catford would be cheaper but it depends whats more important, location or locality.

also, any of the places mentioned you can get to central london from theres train stations all over the gaff!

You could probably get a half decent looking place in New Cross for peanuts, but is it worth the risk of being mugged/stabbed every day?! (i have a friend that lives in new cross and he always has trouble)

    :)
