  1. Hartz-

Tanya has a very good suggestion.  The Trans Canadian is quite a trip.

There are several others that are equally breath-taking, but each in their own way.

One that I can think of off the top of my head is the Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad in Durango, Colorado.

The Cumbres and Toltec is another along the same strip of rail, just a little farther north.

The California Western Railroad from Fort Bragg, CA to Willits, CA is another really nice trip, (AKA Skunk Train).

Many of the other excursion type rail roads, even in my area are an interesting ride.  Roaring Camp and Big Trees Railroad, Niles Canyon Railway, Sugar Pine Railroad, and many others.

My suggestion would be to look up Passenger Excursions.

One club that I belong to is the Friends of 4449 out of Portland, Oregon. The normally take a very nice run from Portland, Oregon into Everett, Washington.

But Amtrak has their moments too.  Their California Zephyr that runs from Oakland to Chicago is quite nice and the Coast Starlight from Los Angeles, CA into Seattle, WA is also a very nice run.

In fact that is the run that my wife and I take twice a year out of San Jose, into Olympia to visit family.  Its quite nice.

In any event, have fun with your rail travels.  There are many more nice trips to take, including many in Canada.

    Enjoy!

  2. I think from the ones I have done, the Indian Pacific through Australia, Sydney-Perth.

With the Nullabor plains as most special, 500+ km straight track, the most bend it has is the bend of the earths surface, then one small bend and over 100 km straight again.

Almost nothing to be seen but very special.

(Pity the trains are not the most comfortable.)

The Trans Canada track is certainly worth going, as are many mountain tracks.

I still hope to go on the Trans Siberia express one day, and the Flam Baner (Spelling?) in Norway, as those attract me enormously too.

I have used the fast trains, both the Shinkansen in Japan and the TGV, Thalys, Eurostar in Europe and while the rides are very smooth, the experience is not amazing except for knowing your speed.

  3. By far the Orient Express, I am not sure the train is still running but check into it and follow the same path for as long as you can.  See the wonder of the world as it has to offer by train as not other train ride can like the Orient Express.

  4. How 'bout a TransCanada train trip??? Even though I've never been on it or any for that matter (would love to one day though), I hear it's spectacular. :)
