Where is the most legitimate place to get an engagement ring resized? also, are there any aftermarks?

just got my gf, now fiance an engagement ring. its a 1kt diamond on a platinum setting. the setting is a size 5. i need to get it resized down to a 4.5.

also, when a ring gets resized, are there any noticeable aftermarks it produces?

Any reputable jewelry store (not the pawn shop down the street) can resize a ring. There should be no marks afterwards. If there are, take it back and have them fix it.

I've had mine resized (at JC Penney where we bought it) and also the ring and wedding band soldered together (at a local jewelry repair place in our mall), and in both cases it turned out great.  Not a sign of any trauma to the ring in either case.

Resizing is a simple procedure. You don't need an amazingly talented jeweler too do it. With that in mind, why not have it sized where you bought it? Many jewelers will size their own jewelry for free or a nominal fee.
