What location on Earth has the smallest fluctuation in its temperature i.e. the smallest range between lowest and highest temperature year round? Please, I'm not looking for speculation on the topic, or unsupported personal opinions, I can make my own. Any link to additional data or resources would be greatly, greatly appreciated, or even an idea as to where to find this information. In the meantime I'll keep looking. Thanks in advance!

  1. Any place on the Equator, although that is not the true definition of a temperate climate.

  2. the Caribbean and the Florida keys

  3. Smallest fluctuation in temp through the year would have to be equatorial regions, particularly near an ocean.

Solar radiation varies least throughout the year here.  It's greatest at the equinoxes, and only slightly less at the solstices.  Compare with mid-latitude regions, where solar radiation varies through the year by 70% or more.

The ocean has a further moderating influence.

Also, there are no weather fronts that affect equatorial regions.  Places like Bali, or near the mouth of the Amazon river have the same temps year-round.  Daily temperatures in these places average about 81F for a low, and 90F for a high in the wet season, and about 75F for a low and 88F for a high in dry season.

Similarly, Quito, Ecuador at 9200 ft elevation and on the equator has all the advantages of a temperate climate, but it's much cooler.  The average high is about 18C/9C or 64F/48F most of the year.  During the short dry season, the average temp is the same, but the daily range is slightly higher.  Then, it's 19C/8C or 66F/46F.

Now, probably the most temperate place in the U.S.as you've defined it above, but with much more comfortable temperatures would be San Diego.  January averages 51F/69F and August is 65F/80F.

  4. I'd say hawaii, because it only has a wet and dry season and it stays in the mid 80's all year long
