  1. The Antarctic Plateau (often referred to as the Polar Plateau) is a large area of East Antarctica, extending for about a thousand kilometers, and which includes the South Pole. It is at an average elevation of close to 3000 meters(10,000 feet).

The plateau was discovered during the 1901-1904 Discovery Expedition of the Antarctic, led by Robert Falcon Scott.

Its altitude, combined with its latitude, mean that temperatures here are the lowest in the world. The almost constant southerly winds make the conditions here even more inhospitable to life. Hence there is practically none, even at the bacterial level.

Ronald Amundsen named the entire plateau Haakon VII's Plateau in honour of King Haakon VII of Norway when he reached the South Pole as the first man ever in 1911. This name has however not been widely used by non-Norwegians.

You are correct that it is located in Antarctica but more specifically in Eastern Antarctica to include the South Pole. If you need latitude and longitude locations, I also posted them here below for your reference.

    Center Latitude/Longitude 86 Degrees, 27 Degrees South

    137 Degrees 26 Degrees East.

    Hope this helps....T.am

  2. Antarctica's interior region is the high Polar Plateau, an area covered with a thick ice sheet.

The Polar Plateau is covered with so much ice that it is always cold; this means that it is always cooling the air above it. As a result, a mass of very cold, dense air sits on top of the Polar Plateau. This cold, dense air wants to sink, so it flows down from the high continental interior toward the lower coast, just as a stream flows down a mountain. These interior winds of cold, dense air are called inversion winds.
