It is based on Mount Airy, North Carolina, the town Andy Griffith grew up in.  It is very much like the TV show town, even today.  The 2BR house that Andy Griffith grew up in is available to rent for $150.00 per night (as of summer, 2008 when we stayed there) and is available through the local Hampton Inn.  The nearby towns of Pilot Mountain(Mt. Pilot on the show) and Fancy Gap, VA were both mentioned on the TV show.  It was a real hoot to visit Wally's Filling Station and Floyd's Barber Shop.  There was even a Weaver's Department Store.  If you are a fan of the show, you really should visit.
