I live in Southern California! Earthquake country!!! I have heard many theories about where the safest place to be during an earthquake is, but I'm not sure what the right place is. I was always trained to get under a desk or a doorway. But some sources say that's NOT the place to be. Does anyone have a definite answer? Provide support for your answer, please

  1. a plane

  2. Somewhere other than where the earthquake is happening.  :)  I live n NV, we sometimes feel your aftershocks...one day Vegas will have beachfront property.  LOL

  3. First safest place, in the air. The reason is obvious.

Second safest place in the open, low to the ground. The danger in earthquakes is being crushed under something, so if there is nothing to crush you, you are more safe. (The chance of a fissure opening under you and swallowing you like Lois Lane in the original Superman movie is very small.

  4. We were taught in school to stand in a doorway if you are stuck inside, no clue if I was taught correctly.

  5. under a desk, under a bed under anything, so nothing can fall on you!!!

  6. There is no safe place.

I'd move to some place safer.

I'll stay here in New England,

    No earthquakes

    No mudslides

    No Wildfores

    Rarely a tornado

Rarely a hurricane - and I'm far enough inland there would be little effect.

And I'm not in the flood plane.

Only thing we have are blizzards and there's plenty of warning and there's very little chance of dieing in one.

  7. i was always told under a desk, a basement.

    can you answer mine?:)

  8. The safest place to be is in New England or Germany or something away from an active fault line.

    :-)

  9. There is a recent theory that huddling on the floor next to a sofa or bed provides some kind of "triangle of safety." It does make some sense, but is quite controversial.

They used to say doorways were safe, but now some experts think a doorway is as likely to collapse in a big earthquake as any other part of the house!

I live in earthquake country, too (western Washington state). A recent BBC documentary predicts that Seattle will endure a 9.1 or greater earthquake in the near future!

In light of all the conflicting evidence, I think I'll just seek out a sturdy table to crawl under--just as I was taught to do so many years ago in elementary school.

  10. Wasnt it  like in a bathroom or something??

  11. Still the doorway

  12. go under somewhere where it wont move like in a cupbored or something?

  13. if you are stuck inside, the doorway is a good place, if not you should try to get outside and look for an open space

  14. triangle of life...

  15. under an item big enough to cover you.

  16. The relatively safest place to be during an earthquake is in a bed.

So, if you're still dozing off during one of those natural disasters, then lucky you.

    best answer?

  17. I heard it is lying in fetal position next to a large object, like on the floor next to your bed or next to a desk. Its usually the roof caving in that squashes you but when it caves it rests on the big objects creating small pockets around them for you to survive in.

  18. Under something is the best because you are in the greatest danger from stuff falling on you.
