Where is the safest place to go during a severe storm if you do NOT have a basement?

There are supposed to be tornadoes and hail likely for my location this evening. However, I do not have a basement. I have the code to my neighbors garage that he doesn't mind if I use to get into his house during storms. I have only gone there one other time, and he is not home. He actually doesn't have a basement but one of the bedrooms downstairs is ground level. Should I use this or go into a closet-if I do should I remove everything, or should I use the bathtub instead, and if so what all should I bring other than my NOAA weather radio, and a flashlight.?

I have to take my grandmother with me also, and I don't have my cellphone with me in case some injuries occur during.

  1. Any interior room without windows that is structurally sound will work. Only go in the bathtub if it is a good cast iron one. Someone suggested under the stairs. That is a good place too.

  2. i would say the bathroom when our house was hit by a tornado the bathroom was the only room not really damaged. u should bring a flashlight, radio, some kind of id, meds, and pillows and blankets to cover yourselves with also any really important documents u dont have in a safety deposit box or something like that.

  3. Go under a staircase.  This is the best place in a storm.

  4. Any interior room without windows. A closet is fine and no reason to remove anything from it.

  5. I've been told that the bathroom is the safest, because of the plumbing.

  6. car. the rubber in the tires are suppose to keep you safe from lightning.

  7. You can take refuge in any room in your house that's centrally located, no windows.  Laundry rooms or bathrooms are recommended because all the plumbing in the walls actually makes the room structurally stronger- at least, that's what I was taught.

The advice to get in your bathtub was from the days when bathtubs were made of cast iron, and thus would be heavier and harder to pick up!!  Nowadays, most tubs are fiberglass or plastic!  But if the bathroom has no windows, it's a good place to go and your tub is as good a place as any!

If you live in a trailer house, I'd take your neighbor up on his offer (if his house isn't a trailer, too!).  Mobile homes are deathtraps in tornadoes, i'm sure you've seen on TV what happens to them when even a weak tornado hits...

    Good luck.
