Where is the serial number on Mercury outboards ?

I have a 1990's Mercury 4 cyl two stroke 40 horse.

The only number that looked like a serial number was in ink on starboard side block...and reads 18758A11. That doesnt seem to match up when online impeller shopping. Thanks.

There should be a little plate on the rear bracket of the motor, that is the serial number.

There should be a metal plate with the Model and Serial numbers on the outside of the motor not under the cowl. It is visible from the side of the motor directly under the power-head.
