Where is the thermostat on a mitsubishi 3000gt? No opinions please, only facts.

It's a dohc, non turbo 1998...In every car I have had, it is right where the top radiator hose meets the engine, but it's not there... I took the hose off, and there is no thermostat there. Before I start taking apart the lower hose, is it there? Please don't respond with opinions, please only respond if you have worked on a 3000gt. It is possible that the previous owner was smart enough to remove it, but why then is the car running hot? The temp needle goes to the middle pretty quickly and stays there, almost as if a thermostat opened at 200. WHERE IS THAT PIECE OF c**p?

On the transmission end there is a coolant manifold that connects the two heads. In the center of the casting is the thermostat cover, 3 bolts. But it sounds like it is working properly, they heat quickly and mid scale is usualy right.
