Question:

Where is the timing belt in my car engine?

It's a '95 Honda Accord LX. I want to see if it needs replacing.

Is it a big deal for a non-mechanic to locate it and how would I know if it needs to be replaced?

Is there any sign that it does just in the way the car runs?

  1. hi there well lets start off with how many miles does your car have you should change the timing belt every 80 to 90 thousand miles. to locat your timing belt is easy but you would need to take off a plastic cover that is located were all the drive belts are. yes it is a big deal to replace it if you never replaced it it is best to have someone show you how or take it to your mechanic and be ready to pay anywear from 300 to 600 hunderd dollars depends were you take it. i also recomend that you get your valves adjusted it will make your car run smoother and and increase power. if your planing to do it on your own get the honda accord manual book at the autoparts and read it to see what tools and parts you will need. I hope you have a air gun and a good compressor tht will give you at least 90 psi . good luck with your car hope this was helpful.

  2. its a big deal, some engines will self destruct (effect of valve meeting piston) if the belt breaks or if not timed properly.

they usually don't give any warning ,but often shear teeth off of the belt during cranking resulting in a no start situation with a noticeable fast cranking speed .

its best to replace any timing belt at about 70 k.

No there's no sign.  There no way to know if it is about to fail.  They just fail after some time/mileage.  Just replace them when it is approaching 60k miles.

the timing belt is under and behind the water pump.  Go to autozone.com and look up your car. They have free repair manuals online (Free).  They have my 94 Civic.

    Good Luck...

  4. everyone here has answered any question you might have and "you" don't stand a chance of replacing it yourself.

  5. You WANT to see if it needs replacing??? Is it broken? If not leave alone. If you are not pretty good with cars dont try to tackle that job. How many miles on car? Honda Timing belts are good for around100,000 miles.
