championship, the Champions Cup which caters for the country's top 16 men and women's teams will be discontinued as of 2006 in favour of an exciting new concept, the TOP 8 Championship for the crème- dela –crème of South African volleyball.

An escalation in the level of competition has made it necessary for Volleyball South Africa (VSA) to streamline the elite competition so that our top performing clubs can participate in an exclusive high level competition which will be provided for by the new Top 8 contest.

Criteria For Qualification For The 2006 Top 8 Champs

The Top seven (7) teams from this year's Champions Cup (2005) and the winner of the 2005 VSA Cup will make up the 2006 Top 8 Championship contenders.

From 2007 onwards, the 8 th placed team (in the Top 8) will automatically be relegated to the 2 nd tier competition, the VSA Cup.

The winner of the VSA Cup will progress to the Top 8 in the following year.

Masinga & Chiya CARRYcarry SA hopes in FIVB World Series ,Beach Volleyball

Since the highly accomplished SA national indoor captain, Andile Masinga paired up with Freedom Chiya in the summer of 2003, they have won every beach volleyball event in which they participated on the South African circuit.

Masinga announced his arrival on the international beach volleyball circuit when he together with Kiruben Naicker from Kwa Zulu Natal secured second place in the inaugural African Beach Volleyball Championship in Maputo , Mozambique in December, 1999.

Two years later his partnership with Gershon Rorich resulted in a spectacular victory at the African Beach Volleyball Championship hosted by Egypt in Alexandria , catapulting them to the number one spot on the African Continental Beach Volleyball circuit.

Masinga's two year stint with professional Belgium outfit, Montroux-Thimister has helped raise the level of his game by several notches.

Freedom Chiya , the relatively unknown entity on the SA national beach circuit owes his rapid rise to fame as a beach volleyballer to the legendary , Andile Masinga.

His partnership with Masinga in 2003 has exposed him as a natural talent on SA's pristine beaches. The success of the partnership emanates from the fact that they complement each other's game superbly. While Masinga's huge frame and effortless elevation out of the sand to execute a block that resembles a solid wall strikes fear in the hearts of his opponents , Chiya's agility and an excellent sense of anticipation makes him an ideal choice as a partner to take care of matters in the back court. However when the need arises for Chiya to attack the game he is as devastating as Masinga.

The explosive duo whose unbeaten record on the South African beach circuit makes them the obvious choice to represent South Africa in the SWATCH-FIVB World Beach Volleyball circuit with the hope of amassing points to make them the number one pairing to represent South Africa and the African continent at the 2008 Beijing Olympics in China.

    Volleyball FIVB World Champs, Tunisia

Winning their first silver medal in an African continental championship at the Federation of International Volleyball (FIVB), World Championship Qualifier in Tunisia where the South African Men’s team defeated North African power houses, Algeria (3-1) and Morocco(3-0) but were pipped to the finish line by favourites Tunisia , heralded in a new era for South African volleyball. No longer will Andile Masinga men be treated as just another submissive Sub- Saharan team ready for the slaughter. Visionary head coach Hamid El Wassimy from Egypt must be credited for turning SA’s fortunes around. Spending hours analyzing his opponents’ systems of play and putting measures in place to counter act them paid handsomely as their once insurmountable North African rivals were out foxed and out gunned by the South Africans.

With SA’s 2004 Athens Beach Volleyball Olympic star Gershon Rorich who took over the crucial role of playmaker and Capetonian Adrian ‘’Gosh’’ Strijdom who plies his trade with professional German outfit , Markranstadt in the Bundesliga , effortlessly displaying his defensive genius in the heart of the SA’s defence , the new look SA team fought off a spirited assault by the over confident Algerians to capture the opening two sets with a 25-22 and 25-17 score line. An unfortunate injury to Masinga took its toll on the team as they suffered a sudden dip in form that resulted in them crashing in the third set , 22-25. Taking advantage of Stijdom’s amazing pick ups and perfect deliveries to playmaker Rorich, chief destroyers Masinga, Freedom Chiya , Thokozani Ntuli, Sugen Govender and Webster Hlabathi wrapped the fourth set with a well deserved 25-18 score line to win the encounter, 3-1.

However in SA’s second match of the championship ,the class exhibited by current African champions, Tunisia overwhelmed them as they were forced to capitulate in straight sets, 25-13, 25-17,25-18.

In their final match against Morocco SA recovered well after making a slow start to level matters at 18-18.With the ever alert , libero, Adrian Strijdom fighting tigerishly in the back court ,setter Rorich was given a steady supply of quality passes which the SA attack force converted to take a hard fought 25-23 first set win. New kid on the block, KZN’s Vuzimuzi Ndimande grabbed the opportunity when coach Wassimy threw him into the fray as Masinga’s replacement in the second set and immediately fired his team ahead. .However, the South Africans were punished by the Moroccan quick hitters whenever they lost focus. Kiruben Naicker was brought on when the score was tied at 21-21 to break the dead lock with his uncanny float service. Naicker did not disappoint his coach as the opposition found his service too difficult to handle .The Moroccans were edged out 26-24. A great all round performance from the South Africans secured them a 25-21 win to wrap up the encounter in straight sets to reach the podium as the silver medalists.
