  1. I don't know what a plant wick is either. I have never heard the term used.

But as far as I DO know, Bird of Paradise stems can be cut back to the base if you are removing dead stalks and/or leaves.

You didn't mention why you need to trim it, but if you are trying to thin or shape the plant you can take up to 1/3 of the stems from both the inside and outside the plant to open it up and allow more air and light to circulate throughout the plant.

You can also divide plants in the spring by digging up the entire plant and separating out the sections and replanting.

I hope that was your question?

  2. it is supposed to be the trunk, you have to trim back all the way to the trunk if you want to promote circulation in your plant,..if not you trim of only half way until you can later go in and take away the rest..I would trim it all the wy to the trunk to be on the safe side...or you can google and ask what is the wick, and see what happens...also you should water away from the trunk just after you trim it back...I hope I have helped...good luck..
