  1. While there are two tidal barrages currently operating (one in La Rance France and one in Annapolis Royal Nova Scotia), there are no large scale, productive Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion (OTEC) plants in operation at this time.  

    The idea for OTEC has been around for over a century and Hawaii has been leading the way to find a practical way to make it work.  They hope to be able to use the temperature difference in ocean waters (depends on the depth) to generate electricity.  The National Energy Laboratory of Hawaii Authority has been able to use the colder sea water directly for air conditioning (saving nearly $4000 per month), but they are not producing electricity yet.
