If you put the rent in an escrow account at a bank, your chances will be much better in any eviction action. While this is not really fair, most courts tend to go with the landlord if there is overdue rent involved.

Sometimes, the court already knows the landlord from other cases, and knows he's a slumlord, which is a big plus for the tenant.

Check with Salvation ARmy and some churches.  They sometimes help people pay the rent if that is the reason for eviction.  Also, you could call Legal Aid in your area for an attorney.

I volunteer at the Salvation army, they help with getting a room at a hotel and may even help you find something else.
