On a shoe-string sabbatical of Europe, the Big Mac and Kentucky Fried Chicken turned out to be life-savers. Their low prices and taste factor were the main attraction, Mac's bonus was the free collectibles, while KFC's crisp, succulent chicken was the nearest thing to our desi tandoori and drew this scribe time and again to the brightly lit eateries of both chains. Now, the world's largest chicken restaurant chain has opened its first restaurant in Mumbai with its mascot Chicky fielding c**k-a-doodle doos from a feisty rival brought by PETA protestors. (With this eatery, the total number of KFC restaurants in India goes up to 15.)

Picketing took place outside the doors of the 160-seater KFC restaurant housed in the KFC Plaza slap bang across rival McDonald's on Bandra's Linking Road as customers gorged on their preferred choices from the menu. PETA's plaint is that the chickens are virtually tortured before landing in the deep freeze (and eventually the cooking pot. KFC's response is that it sources its chicken stocks from Venky's. It's not clear then, why PETA doesn't embark on a non-stop campaign of ALL restaurants serving chicken.

It must be mentioned that pigs in Goa are killed in fashion that would shock PETA (the pigs are given a merry chase by children, dogs and adults through the village before the pigs are laid low; my grandmother used to snap the chicken's neck). I must be a hard hearted person because neither mode of execution has diminished my love for sorpotel and xacuti. It's not as if l'il piggies and chickadees feature daily on the menu, but I have always sought a quick, speedy mode for despatching these animals to the Big Coop or Sty in the Sky.

Veggies can be nourished by ghasphoos but for the frequent or occasional carnivore, the globally renowned Original Recipe Chicken (made with Colonel Sanders' Secret Recipe of 11 herbs and spices), the Hot & Crispy chicken and the Zinger Burger is a must try. The portions are healthy. Theeka lovers might prefer the Hot & Crispy item, the Secret recipe doesn't taste like it's got as many as 11 condiments; it's a tad salty for my liking though the fizzy drinks should wash that down. KFC also offers a range of veg products like a Chana Crunch Snacker, a Veg Pulao and Makhani Curry. The veg menu also includes the Paneer Wrap 'n' Roll and a Veg Thali.

The thali is available in a chicken version as well; both cost an economical 50 bucks; buying each item from the thali separately would cost Rs 15 more. The Chicken and Chana Crunch Snackers, which are available at Rs 25 Clearly, KFC's pricing strategy enables customers to enjoy affordably priced food.

"KFC's presence in Mumbai is an important step in extending this global brand's presence in India," says Sandeep Kohli, Managing Director, Indian Sub-Continent, Yum! Restaurants International, (YRI) which owns KFC along with Pizza Hut, Taco Bell, A & W and Long John Silver. "This year KFC plans to expand its presence at an unprecedented pace. We should have 25 restaurants by end 2006."

"Yum views India as a key strategic market with immense potential for future growth. A buoyant market environment will see KFC scaling its presence to more restaurants in the capital and launch across all major metros in the country through franchisee and self-owned restaurants this year," he added.

Arvind Mediratta, Chief Marketing Office, Yum! Restaurants International said, "KFC is an international brand with an Indian heart and has successfully adapted itself to local tastes and preferences. KFC has also adapted the menu in keeping with Indian sentiments and preferences. All the vegetarian food is prepared with 100% pure vegetarian ingredients, cooked in separate utensils, using separate cooking oils."

It may be mentioned that the food is handled by a separate crew distinctly identifiable in their green colour coded uniforms. KFC has also customised the packaging with colour-coding to distinguish the vegetarian fare. Mumbaikars can also indulge in the international favourite Chicken in a Bucket, pieces of chicken in an attractive takeaway reusable bucket. The menu also includes a Family Feast - an affordably priced meal consisting of proprietary chicken and side orders for larger groups and families. To top off the meal is the Soft Twirl at just Rs 7. For those with a sweet tooth, the brownie-vanilla ice cream priced at Rs 30 would go down better with larger portions.

As part of the inaugural offer, KFC is running a promotion around the letter "K". The brand will offer a special treat for people whose first name starts with letter "K". These lucky "K"s will get free food coupons worth the same value of their order, to be used on their next visit to KFC. A word about KFC. Founded by "Colonel" Harland David Sanders, who hailed from the American Deep South in the 1930's, KFC today has more than 12,300 restaurants in more than 80 countries, serving eight million customers every day, around the world, In Japan, it's known as Mister Fried Chicken. A coal miner's son, it was Sanders cooking expertise that won him the honorary title of Colonel from the then Kentucky governor. It's also interesting how a grandfatherly-looking white man has come to be associated with what is essentially an American-African staple. The desi tandoor version is a more elaborate preparation. For me, the simplest way is to baste the chicken pieces with lemon and garam masala and grill till done.Yummy!

KFC's parent organisation, YRI is the world's largest quick service restaurant company (in terms of system units) with over 33,000 restaurants in more than 100 countries.

It is situated Bandra at Linking road and in Hiranandani at Powai
