  1. I could name so many places on a lake to camp in California it's not funny, from clear lake, lake shasta, lassen, san pedro, yosemite, lake berryessa, etc. I need to know what part of California you are talking about so I can give you specific ideas of where to camp at a lake here in California. I'd love to help you though.

  2. California is 155,959 square miles, 770 miles long and at its widest is 250 miles.  It would help to know where you're talking about and how far you want to drive from your home.

  3. Wow like Time traveler said there are many many choices. it really depends on where and what type of camping. There are National parks, national forests, state parks as well as many private run places. There are also some of the most popular lakeside destinations but unless you get reservations way in advance or going off-season I would say avoid them if you want some solitude. do some web crawling and you can find many places. you may also want to look at BLM run places as they are sweet and not too well known by non avid outdoor-ers.

  4. Up north I used to camp at Lake Shasta.  Down south at Lake Casitas.  I love both, they're the two I grew up camping at the most.

  5. Lake Shasta or Lake Silverwood both have campgrounds around the lake
