Where is very nice but cheap to eat and drink in Paris?

I haven't been before and my husband says it is generally very expensive but surely there must be good value places around? I am staying near the Moulin Rouge and going next week for my 5th wedding anniversary so want to have a nice time on a tight budget.

Staying near the Moulin Rouge means staying in the Red Light District. There are plenty of places in Paris to eat and the prices are quite reasonable it's the beer prices that cost you.

I have found that the cheapest but best value restaurants are in the Latin Quarter, this is just across from the Notre Dame.

There are also some quite reasonably priced around the Sacre Coure area, where the market is during the day,which is pretty close to where you are staying.

I think you will like Restaurant Le Coupe Chou at 9, rue de Lanneau in the 5th arrondissement (the Latin Quarter)

paris i9s v expensive. moulin rouge isnt   as expensive as the Champs Elysee. self servive cafeterias are the most convenient anywhere bec they dont hire hands. big stores have nice restaurants and cafeterias, convenient in all aspects. i would advise you to carry a bar of chocolate and some salty biscuits to avoid having to eat in an expensive place out of necessity.but be well provided with cash.

yes, it will be an interesting couple of nights.  Wow.  Why on earth would you want to stay in Pigalle for two nights?  Anyway, it will be great story material!   Please try not to judge Paris by Pigalle.  There are so many con people there and pickpockets and it's a bit nasty to.  To escape, walk down to Blanche metro, then walk up the hill from there along Rue Lepic and Rue Abesses.  It's filled with all sorts of fun cafes, restaurants, stores...  When you walk along Clichy stay in the middle of the street as opposed to walking on the two sides.  You can avoid the unsavory side of pigalle more easily that way.

Cheap and nice.  Not easy but not impossible either.  

My fav for the best Chinese soup and duck place is Mirama near Saint Michele metro.  This place has been there forever and is a fav with many french politicians.  It's very informal and casual yet has the most incredible soup.  Get the crevette ravioli soup with noodles, and the fried squid is fantastic.  

If you're down on champs elysees believe it or not one of the best and cheapest places to eat is "Cafe Monte Carlo" It's on the corner of Av. Wagram and Troyon right near Etoile.  it's a buffet place and for 9.20 euro you get a selection of main dish, drink, salad/dessert.  The food is quite good (traditional french).

but where you are there's a ton of very cheap places to eat.   But after two days I would get sick of the turk-grec places and pizza places...  

let's see where else...  you're not far from the 19th and 20th where you'll find some amazingly fantastic African and Asian places.  Try "aux village" in the 20th.  It's very inexpensive and is the most authentic sengalese food in Paris.  it's on Av. Parmentier.  Look it up and call for reservations though as it's very very popular.

oh yes, don't forget Chinatown in the 14th near place d'italie!  there are tons of fantastic thai, vietnamese, korean, chinese places there.  all very authentic.  look for the ones that have nothing but asians eating there.  the prices are very low and the food is just as good as anything i've ever had in Beijing!

stay away from latin quarter, rue lappe, notre dame area for food (it's terrible and expensive).  the best food is usually ethnic in the 19th, 20th, 11th, 10th...

whoever suggested eating in latin quarter is just wrong.  It's terrible food, bad atmosphere (crawling with tourists) and you won't even hear french being spoken there.  Such a weird place.

Oh yeah, my fav indian place in all of Paris is "Ghandi's" on the Quai Jemmapes in the 10th arrondissement.  Great prices, far from tourists, and really fun cute place.

yes, another option is to buy the roast chickens in front of every charcuterie, usually served w/ potatoes, then pick up some red table wine at a boutique de vin (or at monoprix) and have a picnic!  The best place for this is Parc des Buttes Chaumont in the 19th.  far from any tourists and close to Jean Jaures where you can find everything you need for a great picnic!  It's really the best chicken i've ever had.
