OK.  The only Malibu apts I know are in the northeast of the island (Canovanas)so I would recommend you look for the nearest Banco Popular to cash your checks. That would be around San Juan or Carolina. Small local businesses may not know how to handle these but at larger stores (at malls, i.e. Macys, JC Penney, Sears, Walgreens, etc) you'll be fine.

If you mean Puerto Rico there are many places depending on which travelers checks you are using (or bank). Malibu apts is too general as you will soon see Puerto Rico is a small island with over 70 cities. Let me know what city and type of checks you will be using so as to provide you with more detailed information. ATM's and shopping centers are throughout the island.
