Hi. I am relocating to Melbourne from Sydney with my husband so I would like to know where most of the Indians stay in Melbourne. I want to know more details of the area with respect to safety and connectivity.

  1. Footscray, Maryibynong. That is where i see a lot of Indians. I see quite a few in Highpoint shopping centre where Maribynong is located. Also i see a lot of Chinese people there too.

  2. There's a Little India in Dandenong, about 30 minutes from the city by train. It has a good train and bus network, though not always the safest area to live and travel in, it has a high crime rate.

The Greater Dandenong City Council website provides links to council services, libraries, employment, business and a whole range of other information. http://www.greaterdandenong.com/index.as...

  3. I'm not aware of a purely Indian enclave in Melbourne (doesn't mean it doesn't exist though).

I am aware though, of a Hindu temple down Carrum Downs way (in the south-eastern suburbs); and there's a large British enclave down in the Patterson Lakes area (same part of the city), so you may find what you are looking for heading down towards the Mornington Peninsula.

As for safety and connectivity, there's a rail link through this area, as well as plenty of buses.  So public transport is reasonable; although if you want to travel "cross country" (ie north to Box Hill for example), you'll find Melbourne's public transport sadly lacking.  Everything tends to revolve around the central hub of The City.  Things are improving though.

As for safety, the areas that have a "bad reputation" tend to be more in the inner city areas; where drug-related crime is more prevalent than out in the suburbs.  But I think that's pretty standard for any industrialised city.

    Hope that helps.

Otherwise (if you do attend a temple or have a religious affiliation), maybe contact your local people and ask them for suggestions.

  4. In the census this year Singh was the third popular lasr name in Melbourne up there with 1st Smith, 2nd Ngyeny! So there are Indians everywhere. There are heaps in the Western Subs, like Sydenham and Taylors Lakes, plus if you have kids or want to buy beautiful and affordable housing you would look in thoses areas, it's the City of Brimbank 20mins from the city. If money is no object then you can move to the south eastern subs where there are heaps of indians. In fact I know many myself in both areas i suggested to you. Good luck and you can e-mail me for more info on Melbourne. If you do make it to the west go to Priya Indian Resturant in Hillside (Taylors Lakes) the chief/owner is Bala, I worked there whenit opened first.
