  1. One of the challenges is what your motivations are in stock investing.  Are you looking for a stock tip to make a quick buck (highly inadvisable...) or are you willing to learn the "how-to"s on become a solid stock investor?

Also, there are a lot of different approaches to stock investing.  Some advocate momentum investing (buying what the market is buying and selling what the market is selling -- in other words, going with the flow or the momentum...).

Others (including me) advocate a value investing approach -- buying great companies when they are cheap and only selling when they become overvalued (this takes discipline and knowing what to look for...)

There are plenty of great resources online.  I have listed some of my favorites on my website, where I provide step-by-step advice on how to get started in stock investing (from a value investing approach...).

On my resources pages are plenty of free resources, and some that cost a little, since they are books that you can purchase through Amazon.com.

    Hope this helps!

  3. You are likely to do better by reading a few books on investing first.  Visit any bookstore or library for many to choose from.  Web sites are a better source for stock fundamentals and history than for learning concepts.  Avoid technical trading schemes (charting, etc) especially at first.  You first need to understand the qualities that make a company great, and secondly learn how to decide when the timing looks right to make a buy or sell.  Learn from masters like Peter Lynch  and Warren Buffet.  Do not accept any one view as the best.  Read a bunch, get some experience and form your own views.  Then be prepared to change them over time.

Before you invest in any security, the first investment you should make is in yourself, and the best investment you can make is by educating yourself.

  5. One thing I did was try one of the online virtual stock exchange games. Marketwatch.com has one. With this, you actually act as if you are buying and selling stock, but you use virtual money. You get familiar with different techniques from evaluating your buys and sells. I think it's a helpful learning tool.

  6. Try morningstar.com
