  1. The newspaper, Bulletin board at school, work or where you live. The best deals come from a friend who has a friend that is selling a car. Whatever you do stay away from those car lots who will sale you someone else's problem in exchange for low payments at a high interest rate. Sure the monthly payment might be low, but by the time you finish paying for it you will have paid several thousands more than the car is worth.

Good luck out there, there are many crooks that are just waiting to take your money.

  2. Auto auctions.  A good percentage of cars and such in the dealerships are bought at auctions for a steal and then they double and triple prices and set them on the lot.  Some auctions offer limited motor and trannie guarantees if you pay over a certain amount on the vehicle..

Craigslist or your local paper also..

Do a carfax, make sure you have someone with you who knows a little about cars.  There are some engines and makes that you should stay away from..

We just bought a car on CL for 1700, changed the bumper and turned around and resold it for 4K.

  3. Just buy from an owner that's selling his old car. If you are under 30 yrs old, take a family member with ya to look at a car. If you are 18, ya may say Mom or Dad are nutz, but think how smart you'll be in 30 years.

  4. This is what our mechanic told us to do and it worked.

Go to someone who's selling their car, not a dealer, find them at autotrader.com, cars.com, craigslist.com.

Research the car for ratings and problems on Edmunds.com

Learn the Kelly Book price for Private Party.

Get yourself a one month Carfax.com plan, so you can check the VIN (vehicle identification number) to see if the car has been in any car accidents.

If you have to, get yourself a loan before you go, because you'll get a better deal if you have cash.

Call the person selling their car, and ask a bunch of questions, one being the VIN #.  Ask, how long have you owned the vehicle?  Why are you selling it now?  What mechancial problems have you fixed.

Go see the car, drive it, look under the hood for oil leaks, look on the ground for oil leaks before he starts it up, look for rust, etc.  Turn on the heat and air conditioning on full blast to make sure they work, along with all the other buttons, windows, wipers etc.

If you like the car, offer to pay for it with cash.  Offer less then the KBB for either good or fair condition.

If he stalls, let him, wait him out for a minute, then say there's others out there.  I'm sorry, I guess I'll look elsewhere, or offer him another hundred...stress Cash...

If the deal goes through, make sure on the Bill of Sale it has the correct VIN number and that you did pay in Cash.

And when you get it registred, make sure the people behind the desk type in the correct information.  I just saw the guy in front of me having a hard time selling his car because his registration said he had a Hyundai instead of a Honda, and he had just noticed the mistake.

    Wish you luck there!

May I suggest a Toyota or Honda if you're buying used.  They'll run forever and a day.  Been there, done that.  I hear Acura's are nice too, but test driving them, I had them last on my list out of the three.

  5. Suggest to have a visit at the 2nd hand cars show rooms instead of roaming around the city after reading n.papers.  find the good one that suits your requirement and clinch the deal.  Finish you will not tired but ofcourse some margnal price will go. (not sure abt. that)

  6. AutoTrader.

    Or your local garage.
