I would start by adding comments on other peoples blogs and guest books, especially ones with the same or similar themes as your own - always sign your comment with your name and your blog URL

Then of course submit your blog address to Google and allow their spiders to crawl and put your content into the search pages:

and Yahoo

http://search.yahoo.com/info/submit.html
