  1. If you are from a foreign country, it will be very difficult to get a teaching job in the United States due to the repressive administration currently in power. Your best bet is to query individual school districts to see if they provide assistance to foreign nationals to get a job in the school district. You will have to jump through a lot of hoops to get a job. Go to the US website for immigration to see what you have to do.

Pick the area you want to live in and then find the school district in that area. Consider Alaska as they usually have teacher shortages. You should also check in liberal cities such as Portland, Oregon, Vancouver and Seattle, Washington and San Francisco and Los Angeles, California.

If you are an American, the best way to get a job is to pick the area in which you want to work and go to the district's websites and look at their employment pages. Special Ed is wide open, so even at this time of year, almost every district has an opening.

To find a list of the school districts in a state, go to the state Department of Education and you will find a list. Some states organize by city, others by county. It is far quicker to do it this way than to go through an agency.

If you don't already have a special education certification, you can often get an emergency certification to teach while you get your credential. In that case it is very important that you choose a city that has a close by college that offers the special ed credential courses. I know some things are now online, but as is typical with online courses, they really pile on the work and you don't learn as much.

California and Florida both offer emergency credentials.

Finally, if you do not have a teaching credential, avoid teaching emotionally or behaviorally disturbed children. They are perhaps the most difficult group and require an expert teacher. You don't want to be learning to teach while students are hanging off the ceiling.

  2. I am an Occupational Therapist that works for the public schools in New Mexico.  We are always in need of teachers and have many teachers from various countries, I don't know what the details are with licensing and hiring procedures.  The areas most in need are our rural areas, but large cities such as Albuquerque are also hiring.
