  1. Norfolk wherries used to be the main form of commercial transport throughtout Broadland. Today Norfolk has only 7 running wherries. Two are traditional ones and the others are wherry-yachts or passenger wherries.

The original wherries were "clinker" built , with overlapping planks.

The mast was hinged above deck level... so that it could be lowered on to the hatches to pass under low bridges.

Also small "Lighters" were used, working as a gang - towed by horses or tugs. They were steered from the first boat of the chain by a massive pole projecting from the bows of the second boat - called the bowsprit. It was something like a tiller, with the second boat acting as a rudder. The remaining boats in the gang trailed along behind. It worked well in narrow channels and around narrow bends.

  2. Tall ships no,They used wherry boats,They can lower the sails and mast as well.

  3. small sailing ships have been trading on the Waverley since it was called the Waegen by the Celts  (way forwards) and the Romans used large trimarans to trade and protect its length, they called it Alveron (named after a woman) because of its moods.
