My best friend and I are planning on backpacking through Europe next June after we both graduate from college. We will be staying in Hostels and being cheap but we haven't made up our minds on where we want to go except Italy (probably Rome, Venice, and Florence). We will have about $5,000 each to spend (including airfare from Houston) so maybe $3400 to spend on hostels, food, and travel. We will be able to be in Europe from 4-7 weeks depending on how well we spend our money.

Also, we would be ok with places in Eastern Europe that are less popular travel spots or Northern Africa or Russia.

So where would you recommend we go?

  1. Russia is fantastic. It is popular but less so for backpackers as its very expensive and takes a little more planning and paperwork to get in and out.

Eastern Europe has really opened up in recent time. Estonia, Czech Republic, Poland and Croatia are real hot spots at the moment.

Eastern Europe is generally cheaper than Western European countries like France, Netherlands and UK.

Grab a good travel book or read some blogs and research the history, culture, people and sights then see what appeals.
