There are no ceiling lights in my living room in my old house so I am installing one - no wiring, no switch, nothing. Do I put this right in the center of the room or off center? Where

  1. Center

  2. I would do on center, or you can do it in the center of your seating area so the room looks better planned out! Hope that helps!

  3. center of the room looks good but, make sure there is minmum 7 foot clearance under fan to floor, depending on how you have your room layout, you may want it closer to the seating area. and not over traffic areas.  Make sure it is attached to solid wood joist or blocking!

  4. I like to install ceiling fans in the center of the room. Factors to consider is the arrangement of your furniture, maybe the actual center of your layout is different from the physical center of your room. Also you should try to attach the fan directly to a joist using a fan rated electrical box, or a remodel "old work" fan support bar and box combination, that can be installed from underneath and goes between two joists, beams, trusses, etc. Also consider how much room you have to work in the attic to run wires, drill a hole in the top plate directly above the desired switch location, and connect to a circuit that is not overloaded using a junction box. You may have to cut holes in the drywall if there is limited space above the ceiling to maneuver as you run the wiring, so you can pull the wires from below using a fish tape, then patch the holes using the same pieces you cut out, and fiberglass mesh tape, multiple finish coats, and texture to match. Use a old work blue plastic switch box, pull the wire through the perfect sized hole you cut for it, through the box hole, then install the box by tightening the screws that cause the drywall tabs to swing out and lock the box in place.

  5. I just did this project 1 month ago and  It is a lot of work.  I'm assuming the shape of the room is square/rectangle?  To start I used string from corner to corner making an "X" to find the center of the room.  You can attach the strings in each corner of the room with little nails that won't cause visible damage to your ceiling.  Once I found the center, I drilled a tiny hole big enough for a hanger to fit through the hole.  I put the hanger in the hole and crawled into the attic to see what it looked like there.  Mine was between to joist which was fine but I did have to attack a 2x4 between the joists to hang by J-BOX from.  Once I was satisfied that my location would work, I went on from there.

If you found this info useful and need more help email me and I'll let you know what I ran into doing the rest of the project

    good luck,
