I'm Vietnamese, studying in Japan right now and gonna transfer to a State college. I received the I 20 form from that college already. So where should I get the F1 Visa ? in Japan or in my home country - Vietnam ?

Some of my friends said that it may be more difficult for you to obtain a visa outside the country of your permanent residence. Is that true?

I really need your help.

Thank you so much.

  1. It is usually easier to do it from your own country. Since your paperwork will be Vietnamese in nature and the US Embassy in Japan is most likely not familiar with this type of paperwork it may need be sent to Vietnam and back. Is there anyone in the Embassy who speaks Vietnamese? If not that can cause more problems.

It can be done but it may take longer due to the difficulties.

  2. Since you are currently studying in Japan, and therefore can cite ties to your present location, you are welcome to apply at the US embassy in Japan.
