  1. Before you purchase any pet, check out the stores completely.  Is the store or breeders facility clean?  Are they feed a variety of foods?  If the seller a pet owner, does he or she take time with the birds or just there to sell you a product?  Just because they sell pets, doesn't mean they know or love pets.  They may just be there to sell you an animal.  Many stores get their cockatiels from bird farms and that is it.

Hand-fed and hand raised cockatiels are more expensive than other cockatiels but they may be what you want if you want a more tame bird. Good luck and enjoy.

Ask yourself do you want a pet that needs a lot of attention, and are you able to give the baby cockatiel the attention it needs?

Cockatiels are wonder full pets and companions.  I have several.

  2. I agree with the girl who posted the 1st answer. I think it is best to buy from a breeder that has had experience.

  3. If you are going to get a pet bird, don't buy, adopt one instead. This way, you'll get your bird for a fraction of the pet store (or breeder) price, and also know the personality of the bird you're going to get. But best of all, you'll be helping a bird in need -- there are so many good abandoned pet birds out there in parrot sheltesr needing good homes, and breeding or buying fresh birds worsens the situation for them and their future generations. Visit http://www.avianwelfare.org to find the nearest parrot shelter. They are dedicated to rehabilitating and rehoming abandoned, neglected or abused pet birds in good, forever homes. So it's a great all-around source to get your pet bird from.

The second best choice is a reputable breeder. Most general pet stores are generally horrible places to get pet birds from (of course, there are always exceptions).

  4. private breeder who has hand raised them..  or  some pet stores that have hand raised the birds.

  5. petsmart, petco etc....

  6. I would go to a breeder. That way you know all about the baby. When it was hatched what it eats etc.. I have seveal birds and when you adopt them you don't know what their history is. All mine have been adoptied but two  which I bought from a breeder. But then I know a lot about birds and can deal with the biting and retaming from the bad home lifes they have had.

You might also want to check out a bird forum such as this one http://www.myjungle.net/forum that way you can talk to other bird owners, and bird breeders.

You can also go here http://myjungle.net and check out the bird breeder directory and see if there are any bird breeders listed near you.

    Good luck

I am a mama of 10 sweet birds.

  7. Get the cockatiel from a private breeder. Check this site out www.kijiji.com for a cockatiel breeder in your home town.
