I'll be moving to Vic in 3 months, first renting a place and once i secure a job and get a loan i'll be looking for a place to buy, somewhere quiet yet not too far from Melbourne (like 1 hour away by car), and a bit rural~ish ,well not crammed like sydney houses that almost touch eves.I once stayed with a friend near Moe and loved the place, so something like that...but not Moe.

  1. If you are looking for somewhere within 1 hour drive of Melbourne you do have quite a few options, just depends on how rural you want to be....

The Geelong and Surf Coast areas are within about an hour drive from Melbourne (depending on traffic of course). Houses are a lot less 'crammed' than those in Sydney. House prices are better than Melbourne, although do get a bit pricier closer to the coast. There is a highway that goes directly into Melbourne from Geelong.

Ballarat is a beautiful place, with lots of history and older-style buildings, quite good restaurants/cafes/shopping etc. The weather is often the biggest complaints people have about it, as it tends to be a bit cooler than other parts of Victoria. I lived between Ballarat and Melbourne for some time, and never noticed a huge difference, just the odd day here and there that Ballarat had more rain (and thats hardly a bad thing at the moment). House prices are far better than Melbourne. There is a major highway (that is currently being upgraded with a by-pass) that will take you straight into Melbourne.

There are also smaller towns along the way to Ballarat on the Highway that are a bit more rural such as Bacchus Marsh and Ballan. These also have very easy access to Melbourne.

There are also direct trains that go to Geelong and Ballarat from Melbourne. So sometimes you don't need to use the car (saves fuel!).

Victoria is a beautiful state to live in, with a cosmopolitan capital city, easy roads to get around, beaches, parks, sports, and everything else you would need.

    Good Luck!

  2. I agree with Johnson. Also I would add looking at the Dandenong ranges to the East of Melbourne (easy commute).

Philip Island is nice. But no idea about rental property prices there.

Violetown is a cute small town if you want a little artsy community.

Shepparton is a nice large town. Well it gets mixed reviews, but I think it is nice.

There are so many options, I think you need to drive around and get a feel for it yourself.

I'm sure you will find somewhere you love.
