i will be living in one big room with three other people. Im worried about when im away what should i do with my valuables. I bought a laptop lock but that wont completly stop theft. I need to lock it away. There are no lockable door or drawers in the room. I dont think a safe will be a good option because someone could just carry one away. Any suggestions appreciated.

  1. Your best bet would to leave them at home. You cant trust anyone anymore. You might wanna buy a trunk to put under your bed or in the closet. Make sure it has a lock on it and if you want to, go to Wal-Mart and buy another. You can never be to careful.

  2. get a mini safe thingy! like its hard and metal [can live through a fire] and you can punch in your own little code thingy so only YOU can get in. sometimes they have them in hotels. check ebay! type in Mini Safe or something like that. HOPE i HELPED! :D

  3. Are you going to college in an inner city? Because I've never heard anyone be quite so worried about stealing from dorms. I went to college in the middle of a drug filled area of a struggling city and never once had anything stolen. Of course it's smart to be careful, but if your computer is locked to your desk (which I assume the laptop lock is) and you have your valuables in a safe in a hidden away spot (wardrobe maybe) you will most likely be fine. Usually, even with roommates you dislike, there's an understanding about belongings. And if you feel like one of your roommates is unsafe or will bring around unsafe people, then you need to talk to the Residential Life department and move dorms.

Another thing is- if you have something very valuable, don't bring it with you, keep it at home or at a safe deposit box in a bank. I had a roommate who did cocaine and other drugs my freshman year and even she didn't steal anything from me....

    Good luck.

  4. If you're this worried about your valuables, perhaps just keep them at home?  You probably won't need a laptop because your dorm will likely have a computer and the school will have at least one computer lab or room with computers in it.

  5. You can buy a locker similar to high school. It takes up little room and would be obvious if someone tried to walk off with it. Check a sporting goods store or ebay.

  6. some safes you can get instaled permenatly in the room.

    that would work

  7. I don't think there's a good way to "lock" all your things. I mean, your roommates will obviously be aware of the fact that you don't trust them, and also, there is no such thing as a place where you would place all of your belongings in order to prevent them from being stolen. You can, however, make sure that you always lock your doors, do not leave valuables such as jewelry lying around for everyone to see. Theft of property in dorms is unlikely unless it is carried out by an outsider that manages to sneak in, but if your doors are locked there's no way of that occurring. If you were to suspect of your roommates then your Resident Adviser would help you from there.

  8. My son has an old Army foot locker with a key lock on it. He keeps  cash, DVDs, lap top, medications, and computers games in it. A foot locker is pretty big and his is painted a bright blue. It serves as a "coffee table" too.
